Build Identifier: version 1.5 (20051201)
If the "Search for new messages" is enabled on the RSS acount, but there are no accounts, the progressbar keeps running forever. Not critical, but very annoying. Stop button does not prevent it. Removing the "Search for new messages option", does prevent it.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Add a RSS feed
2. Check "Search for new Messages" in account settings
3. Remove all RSS feeds
4. Restart Thunderbird, and watch the progress bar (and activity indicator)
Actual Results:
The progress bar and activity indicator keeps running, making it look like there is a mail download or similar
Expected Results:
Not start the progressbar at all
No theme, standard XP Pro, Thunderbird 1.5 (Danish version) from mozilla.org

I see this behavior, also, using Thunderbird version 2.0.0.9 (20071031) on Windows XP. Is this the same problem being reported in bug 277634?
Disabling the "search for new messages" check box in the "RSS News and Blogs" account fixed the problem. Likewise, adding a valid RSS feed to the account also fixes the problem. Finally, removing the "RSS News and Blogs" account also solves the problem and is a reasonable work-around for anyone with no RSS feeds.
So, the problem only seems to appear when:
1. there is an "RSS News & Blogs" account
2. there are no RSS subscriptions in that account
3. and "Check for new articles at startup" is selected
