Mozilla Addons
Mozilla Add-ons
Mozilla Stuff
Extend Mozilla
Others
Whatever. But we need to make it consistent. Once we've decided on what we're calling ourselves, we need to apply the name on the site. The url, the title images, and all the places we refer to ourselves. Might also rename the bugzilla product, but maybe not.
Whatever we do, we want it to be final. The url has already changed far too many times (I think update.mozilla.org, then addons.update.mozilla.org and now addons.mozilla.org)
Personally, I like Mozilla Addons. I think the hyphen looks icky (especially so if we put it in the url: add-ons.mozilla.org)
I'm not really sure about what the correct spelling of addons is, but in this day and age language and spelling is so fluid that things can change. (Eg. programme vs program)
[28/04/2006 4:05 AM] <shaver> I wonder how many people would get pissed if I renamed the product to Addons
[28/04/2006 4:05 AM] <morgamic> nobody
[28/04/2006 4:05 AM] <Cameron> me
[28/04/2006 4:05 AM] <shaver> it'd break existing queries
[28/04/2006 4:05 AM] <tH> heh
[28/04/2006 4:05 AM] <Cameron> well not pissed off
[28/04/2006 4:05 AM] <morgamic> doh
[28/04/2006 4:05 AM] <tH> Addons or Add-ons? ;)
[28/04/2006 4:05 AM] <shaver> tH: seriously :/
[28/04/2006 4:05 AM] <shaver> "AMO"
[28/04/2006 4:05 AM] * morgamic votes for AMO
[28/04/2006 4:06 AM] <morgamic> although AMO isn't very helpful
[28/04/2006 4:06 AM] <Cameron> but users will file bugs regarding specific addons if we callit addons
[28/04/2006 4:06 AM] <shaver> Cameron: yeah
[28/04/2006 4:06 AM] <morgamic> addons.mozilla.org?
[28/04/2006 4:06 AM] <Cameron> whatabout addons.mozilla.org?
[28/04/2006 4:06 AM] <morgamic> or Addons
[28/04/2006 4:06 AM] * morgamic throws his hands up in the air and waves them like he just don't care.
[28/04/2006 4:06 AM] <Cameron> I really dislike add-ons... hypens are teh sux
[28/04/2006 4:06 AM] <Cameron> actually I wonder..
[28/04/2006 4:07 AM] <Cameron> ---
[28/04/2006 4:07 AM] <morgamic> Addons is fine w/ me
[28/04/2006 4:07 AM] <tH> The Web App Formerly Known As Update
[28/04/2006 4:07 AM] <shaver> add-ons is better
[28/04/2006 4:07 AM] <shaver> I used to be a serious addons believer
[28/04/2006 4:07 AM] <morgamic> how about addtrons
[28/04/2006 4:07 AM] <shaver> (you can see it in the d-a-f thread about the extensions UI)
[28/04/2006 4:07 AM] <shaver> but add-ons is much more common, and we already use it in the site!
[28/04/2006 4:08 AM] <shaver> https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/
[28/04/2006 4:08 AM] <shaver> er
[28/04/2006 4:08 AM] <shaver> https://addons.mozilla.org/images/title-firefox.gif
[28/04/2006 4:08 AM] <Cameron> <title>Firefox Addons :: Mozilla Addons :: Add Features to Mozilla Software</title>
[28/04/2006 4:09 AM] <Cameron> we gotta sort ourselves out a name methinks
[28/04/2006 4:09 AM] <shaver> yes
[28/04/2006 4:09 AM] <shaver> and it will be add-ons
[28/04/2006 4:09 AM] <morgamic> Mozilla Add-ons
[28/04/2006 4:09 AM] <Cameron> add-ons.mozilla.org?
[28/04/2006 4:09 AM] <morgamic> lol.
[28/04/2006 4:10 AM] <shaver> we'll want a CNAME, yeah
[28/04/2006 4:11 AM] <morgamic> seems kind of silly to me :(
[28/04/2006 4:11 AM] <morgamic> (the domain anyway)
[28/04/2006 4:11 AM] <shaver> we'll see
[28/04/2006 4:14 AM] <Cameron> hmm.. http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/addon http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/add-on - hoorah for unhelpfulness
[28/04/2006 4:14 AM] <shaver> yahoo search for the two
[28/04/2006 4:15 AM] <shaver> (google folds the hyphen)
[28/04/2006 4:15 AM] <morgamic> what if we just went with something like extend.mozilla.org
[28/04/2006 4:15 AM] <shaver> yeah
[28/04/2006 4:15 AM] <shaver> that's actually a more likely plan
[28/04/2006 4:16 AM] <shaver> extend-firefox.com or some such
[28/04/2006 4:16 AM] <Cameron> very theme exclusive though
[28/04/2006 4:16 AM] <shaver> how so?
[28/04/2006 4:16 AM] <shaver> themes extend the browser
[28/04/2006 4:16 AM] <shaver> ieaddons.com uses "add-ons" everywhere, so the domain thing probably isn't a big deal
[28/04/2006 4:16 AM] <shaver> and users don't much distinguish the cases, I strongly expect
[28/04/2006 4:17 AM] <Cameron> it's ambgious. addons includes themes and extensions.. but does extensions include both extensions and themes?
[28/04/2006 4:17 AM] <shaver> I didn't say "extensions", I said "extend"
[28/04/2006 4:17 AM] <shaver> that's what the user wants to do
[28/04/2006 4:17 AM] <Cameron> yah
[28/04/2006 4:18 AM] <Cameron> but extend and extension are too related imo
[28/04/2006 4:18 AM] <Cameron> you extend your browser with an extension
[28/04/2006 4:18 AM] <morgamic> what color is the bike shed?!?!
[28/04/2006 4:18 AM] <Cameron> red!
[28/04/2006 4:18 AM] <morgamic> http://www.unixguide.net/freebsd/faq/16.19.shtml
[28/04/2006 4:19 AM] * Cameron has learnt a new metaphor
[28/04/2006 4:19 AM] <morgamic> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_of_the_bikeshed
[28/04/2006 4:19 AM] <morgamic> actually it's not completely applicable
[28/04/2006 4:19 AM] * morgamic shrugs
[28/04/2006 4:20 AM] <shaver> it isn't, indeed
[28/04/2006 4:20 AM] <morgamic> if we talkeda bout domains and CNAMES for 12 hours, though...
[28/04/2006 4:21 AM] <morgamic> i figure it's best to just pick something and go with it, and if that's add-ons, works for me.
[28/04/2006 4:21 AM] <morgamic> just as long as it's consistent.
[28/04/2006 4:21 AM] <shaver> yeah
[28/04/2006 4:21 AM] <Cameron> consistancy++
[28/04/2006 4:21 AM] <Cameron> we all agree on that
[28/04/2006 4:21 AM] <morgamic> yay
[28/04/2006 4:23 AM] <shaver> "consistency" :)
[28/04/2006 4:23 AM] |<-- MaQiavelli has left irc.mozilla.org:6697 (Quit: ( www.nnscript.de :: NoNameScript 4.02 :: www.XLhost.de ))
[28/04/2006 4:23 AM] <Cameron> pfft
[28/04/2006 4:24 AM] <Bazzi> if you cannot decide whether it's addons or add-ons, use valueadd ;-)
[28/04/2006 4:24 AM] <shaver> value-add, honestly
[28/04/2006 4:24 AM] <Bazzi> hehe
[28/04/2006 4:33 AM] <tH> as usual, "stuff" is the answer.
[28/04/2006 4:34 AM] <Cameron> stuff.mozilla.org
[28/04/2006 4:35 AM] <Cameron> I like it :D
[28/04/2006 4:35 AM] * Cameron fears for the poor users :(

Taking. We have a bunch of branding/user-facing work on the horizon, as part of which we should absolutely make our naming consistent. "Add-ons" (but addons.m.o as hostname) is the leading candidate for the current site, though it's entirely possible that we'll end up with more than one (but hopefully not more than three!) user-facing sites.
Anyway, thanks for filing this.
Starting to think we need a Policy component...

These are the only two references I can see in the public site (apart from {$title} which I don't know how to change.) But then, I didn't look very hard. Using search engines proved difficult as they pick up the lack of hyphen in the URL.
The developer section is a whole new kettle of fish of course...
This is taking more relevance now that we've split the design.
For remora.. "Mozilla Add-ons" seems fine enough to me (yes, Shaver whipped me, and now hyphens haunt me wherever I go.)
