(Reporter: cmobrienforums, Assigned: mscott)
Details
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.0.2) Gecko/20060308 Firefox/1.5.0.2
Build Identifier: Thunderbird version 1.5.0.2 (20060308)
When downloading messages, an email newsletter from any of the following sources will cause Thunderbird to immediately quit downloading messages and not report any error. This happens every time from the first 2 newsletter sources. This happened every time with the last 2 email sources with 1.5.0.1, but I haven't tested them again. Since the bug I reported regarding the last two sources is still unconfirmed, I assume that they will still cause the transfer to fail.
TO REPRODUCE: Sign up for the following newsletters and Thunderbird will reproduce what I'm experiencing.
CounterSpy news letter - popular anti-spyware software.

-
NetIQ Netresults newsletter

-
Eeye Security's Versa newsletter

-
Eweek's "Securing the Enterprise" newsletter.

Create an account.
Then sign up for the newsletter "Securing the Enterprise."
-
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Sign up for the newsletters listed in the details section.
2. When Thunderbird checks messages, begins downloading, and fails, check your mail with another email client and you'll see one of these newsletters as being the email Thunderbird could not download.
3.
Actual Results:
Thunderbird downloads the messages right up to the newsletter that causes the problem, then stops checking them and does not report an error. You can click on "check messages" again, but it will not pull that message down. And when more messages come to that box, they will pile up because Thunderbird cannot pull down the newsletter. This makes going in via the web necessary to clear out the message or using a differente email client to delete it.
Expected Results:
The software should download the email and not fail on any message. Also, if there is a problem in downloading, it should report an error.
This must be affecting other people also. The emails appear to have x-html tags and all sorts of other tags. Plain text emails come in fine. It's just these flashy-looking newsletters that give TB some trouble.

You already file bug 310855 about this.
You could attach a protocol log there? Was this imap or pop? Also make sure to try without firewall/antivirus.

Yes it is a duplicate. But the other bug is _6 months old_ and I still cannot use Thunderbird because it chokes on certain emails. I gave all the data necessary to reproduce this bug but there's no communication confirming it. It doesn't need to be fixed immediately, but I'd like to see it confirmed as a real bug.

That's because noone has been able to reproduce it. If you have additional info, comment in the relevant bug, opening a new one is of no use.

So, did you try turning off firewall/antivirus?
