I'd like to be able to set a prefix to be displayed in the window title, along with the title of the page, to serve as a kind of window subject or topic.

For example... I open a window for researching wombats.  Within that window, I open several tabs for different sites/pages.  The title of the current page shows in the window title.  Eventually, I have several windows open, each about different subjects, and I can't find the one with the wombat info :-(  

If I could enter a prefix, like "wombat", then when I look at the window title, I'd see "wombat: <title of currently displayed page>".  So when I see a list of my windows, like in the start bar, or alt-tab, I'd see the prefix and know the subject of that window.

This would be more suitably implemented as an extension, such as: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/1298/

I recommend WONTFIX.

Mea Culpa, didn't think to look in extensions.... not used to using such an extensible browser ;-)

However, it strikes me that such a functionality should be inherent in any tabbed browser.  I'd still like to see it included.  Although at a low priority... very low.

I don't think it is suitable. I can't see many people using such functionality, and there's no harm in just leaving it in extension land.
If you feel strongly that this should be included in the core browser, why not start a thread on mozilla.dev.apps.firefox on news.mozilla.org? If the consensus is that this _should_ be a core browser feature, please re-open this bug report.
