QA Contact: message-compose
I have exactly the same problem, except in Firefox. It appears that all monospaced text is rendered with incorrect width. Making simple corrections in text boxes is infuriatingly difficult. I usually open up a text editor and cut and paste the text in after I am done editing. That it would be so difficult to compose a simple web-based email is bizarre.
Sorry, I think I misreported this -- it's in Firefox, not Thunderbirdd. It's happening right now. It startsts right away, not after 3 inches. Suddenly one day out of this blue, this problem started. It happens with EVERY box you attempt to write a commeeent in. It's amazingly annoying!!!!!!!!
After some additional searching, it appears that this might be a duplicate of Bug # 354497. Setting the monospace text font to 12 point (rather than what appears to be the default 13) in the advanced font settings tab box causes the problem to disappear.

Okay, I'm testing the monospace text font at 12, and it seems to be working. But 12 is small, and it's not what I want, and Firefox never did this before! I remain bummed out ...
It appears that the bug only appears with monospace font size set to 9, 11, 13, 15, 16, 17. I did not test at sizes larger than 17. More details at Bug # 354497.
Testing at 14 point -- nope, that first t ( in "that") disappeared. Nob good!
