Hi, I recently installed thunderbird for the first time. One email newsletter I subscribe to crashes the viewer when i try to forward the message. It works fine in Outlook Express.

I can view the message fine in the preview pane, and fine when I open the email. But when I forward it, it seems to come up in a compose window, but then just hangs "(Not Responding)" in titlebar. To get out I have to click the X (close), get an error box (Not responding) and select Close Now, which closes the whole Thunderbird app with all its windows.

Reproducible: Always
version 1.5.0.2 (20060308)
Summary: opening email message crashes thunderbird → forwarding email message crashes thunderbird
Version: unspecified → 1.5
This isn't actually hanging, but it is taking a very long time to complete the process of an inline-forward into an HTML compose window. It's a large,
complex message. I would agree, however, that it takes far too long -- about three CPU-minutes, on my 750MHz P3 system. Edit as New also drags on for a
long time.

(The message also takes a noticeable amount of time to simply display in the message pane, and closing the compose window containing the forwarded message likewise takes a non-trivial amount of time.)

Note that opening the message attached here from the .EML file won't
necessarily exhibit the problem when forwarding; it's necessary to integrate
the message into a mail folder.
Summary: forwarding email message crashes thunderbird → Inline forwarding (HTML) apparently hangs thunderbird
Jonathan: Does turning of spell checking help? (-> bug 324521, fixed for 2.0)
With my copy of reporter's message, the performance is much better with inline spellcheck turned off. Also using 2a1-0523, with inline spellcheck enabled; I don't know why I didn't try a 2a1 build when I tested this...

Yes! Turning off "Enable Spell as you type" appears to fix this problem.
Duping per reporter's comment 6.
