When trying to download http://dlsvr03.asus.com/pub/ASUS/nb/A6G/e2312_A6NeGUK_sw.pdf system resources jumps from 2-4% up to 100% and fails to complete the download. I have managed to download this file using IE without any problems. The system I am using is ASUS A6K Notebook Running Win Xp SP2 with all updates for all software loaded.

Reproducible: Always

This is a 120 page document of which I had no problem downloading using IE. I attempted to download this file on at least 5 occasions at various times on different days all with the same result using FF. No other actions were being performed by the processor other than background programs. System resources being used prior to attempting the download were at 2% within minutes of attemting to download this document system resources jumped to 100% and was unable to cope with the download.I left the download to "do its thing" for up to 2 hours with no advancment in the download after the first few minutes. The same thing happened every time. Termination of the download using CTL/ALT/DEL imediately returned used system resources to 2%. When downloading this file using IE system resources never went above 15%. Hope this information helps
What is Adobe Reader and PDF plugin version? (Read meta Bug 336184 comment #2)

By the way, I'd like to know why you can not find Bug 336184 or bugs listed in dependency tree of Bug 336184.
"Searching bugzilla" is too difficult? Keywords in summary are inappropriate?
(I added "100%" in summary of Bug 336184 on 2006-05-04 for your case, but...)
(See "View Bug Activity" of Bug 336184, please.)

What is your "system resources" which increases from 2-4% to 100%?
CPU utilization? Real Memory usage? GDI resource usage? Bad width usage of communication line? Hard disk space usage? Or other?

> When trying to download http://.../..._sw.pdf

What does your "trying to download" mean?
(a) Click the link or enter the URL in urlbar, in order to display the PDF file
    in a Browser tab.
(b) Click the link or enter the URL in urlbar, in order to display the PDF file
in independent Adobe Reader application window.
(c) Choose "Save Link As" of context menu of the link for the PDF, in order to
save the PDF file to your hard disk.
("Download" as user action is generaly used for (c) in software development,)
(although downloading of file to local-disk is involved in (a) and (b) too. )

What does your "Log on" to a URL for PDF file mean? What operation?

File size of this PDF is 13,822 Killo-Bytes.
And when I "Download"ed the PDF file thru "Save Link Target As" of context menu of the link(Seamonkey, "Save Link As" when Firefox), download speed displayed in Download Manager panel was 10 to 20 KB/sec(Killo-Bytes per second).
(I use max 70Mbps(bits per second) VDSL modem link.)
This means it'll take 700 seconds(10 minutes) to 1400 seconds(20 minutes) to simply save the PDF file locally.

How long will it take to "Save Link As" when your Firefox on your notebook?
Does "system resources jumps from 2-4% up to 100%" occur on any PDF link when Firefox?
Or when this very big PDF file at asus.com only?
I get a similar effect downloading pdfs. I use Firefox 2.0 on a Mac Powerboook 1Ghz PPC G4 CPU with 1.5GB DDR SDRAM running Os X10.4.8 My 'broadband' account is a fossilized 512k.

If I download using the pdf link on http://www.genetics.org/cgi/content/full/172/1/445
I get the spinning pizza for 4-5 min while the download happens.

If I do the same using Safari, the pdf appears on the webpage in half the time, without the spinning pizza. So at least I can open another page and do something in Safari while I am waiting.

What I would really like to do in Firefox is download without the holdup, and be able to rename the file and place it in a directory of my choice (different for each file).
No response from bug opener, even though very simple question for Plugin version...
