Description

User-Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1)
Build Identifier: SeaMonkey 1.0.1

Every instance of SeaMonkey [previous and current version] that has been installed on various machines [Win 98Se, Win XP Pro sp2] crashes when the preview pane is enabled under some odd condition not yet determined.

This bug did not exist in the Mozilla Application Suite and was not corrected in SeaMonkey version 1.0.1.

Opening a browser session at the same time as an email window reduces the frequency of this bug.

Eliminating the preview pane avoids the crash alltogether.

Reproducible: Sometimes

One condition that seems to occur more frequently is.
Switching to a folder where the first email is unread, eg switching from a folder to Inbox after an email has arrived.

Sometimes after two repetitive crashes of SeaMonkey the next crash just kills the whole PC stone dead and it restarts.

Could you install with talkback and get a talkback ID for the crash? http://kb.mozillazine.org/Talkback

When the crash occurs it raises
unhandled exception in seamonkey.exe (JS3250.dll) 0x00000090. float invalid operation.
Offending instruction at 60dc0405 is fldz

The problem is the same in seamonkey 1.0.2.

After a complete crash of the machine Microsoft reports a failure in a device driver.

The failure that causes the abend of seamonkey is less likely to be repeatable after a reboot of the PC.

I hope this helps - this bug should have been reported by others by now. I don't wish to install talkback.

Thanks

sorry. if you want to see something fixed, you're going to need to install talkback.

afaik fldz is a fairly harmless instruction which doesn't help matters.

With Talkback agent on no incident is created when this crash happens.

By examining the WIndows Event viewer I was able to find this same error every time SeaMonkey crashes:

Faulting application seamonkey.exe, version 1.8.20061.3003, faulting module js3250.dll, version 4.0.0.0, fault address 0x0001292f.

It doesn't matter which version of SeaMonkey crashes the error in the JS3250.dll is always the same.

Can anyone indicate what might be causing this or what to try to get around the crash.

It only happens when the preview pane is enabled and you select an email which may or may not have been viewed before. After the crash if you try and view the same email it will crash again.

The only way I found to get around it is to, turn off preview, open the email, then turn preview back on then that email will not cause the crash but another one will at some random time.

When will the fix make it into a public release?

It is deplorable that on version 1.1.6 the problem still remains.

It is critical enough to crash the PC stone dead and should have been fixed long ago.

However after a lot of research I found a way to prevent this happening under most conditions.

Bypass: As soon as SeaMonkey Mail&Newsgroups window opens, right click any email and choose "Open Message in New Window" then close that window. After that it shouldn't crash anymore.

With such a simple fix why can't it be included in the start up of the Mail&Newsgroups window?

I presume the problem is sometimes JS3250.dll doesn't load properly so if it is pre loaded then there is no problem.

The only time this does not work is when the crash occurs on opening the Mail&Newsgroups window [with preview pane enabled] before you can apply the bypass.

timeless indicates it's fixed on trunk - so you won't see it until SM 2.0 is public. Unless you want to run trunk. To anticipate your question - SM 2 is a long way off.
Summary: Email frequently crashes with preview pane → Email frequently crashes with preview pane - faulting module js3250.dll

timeless,
would you remember which bug ?
Could it be ported to the 1.8.1 branch ?

This SeaMonkey crashing problem has never been addressed - its been in all versions including v1.1.9.

I use the Bypass to avoid SeaMonkey crashing. The PC only crashes after multiple SeaMonkey crashes - I don't normally allow SeaMonkey to mulltiple crash so I cannot say if it still crashes the PC but I can assure you it will crash SeaMonkey if the bypass is not applied. [report of 2007-11-06 11:10:37 PDT]

Do we have an idea when it will be addressed?

Simply automatically loading the JS3250.dll module at startup would probably resolve the problem, so there would be no more crashes of SeaMonkey or the PC.

hrm, try reading bug 334263 and *all* of the referenced bugs.
sturges,
Can you reproduce with SeaMonkey v2.0a1pre (which has a crash reporter) ?

(for now) I gave up at bug 334263 comment 115.
NB: Before this comment, I found only 1 patch (bug 346933), which is FF specific.
