I propose that planet.mozilla.org should only be for mozilla-related topics. I read planet to find out about mozilla news, not to find out about peoples' opinion on the teletubbies or how they like their toast cooked.
Sure, I love hearing about people's news and thoughts just as much as the next person, but I'm only really interested in some people's - people I know. So I subscribe to their blogs' feeds. I am, however, interested in the great majority of Mozilla-related news, so I subscribe to planet.
If someone has built a Firefox extension that tells me how long it will take to cook my egg, I'm interested - https://addons.mozilla.org/addon.php?id=392 - If someone is just randomly ranting about how cookings eggs isn't what it used to be, I'm not interested.
Modern blogging software has the ability to do this, eg:
Movable Type:
http://www.beaufour.dk/blog-archives/mozilla/
http://www.beaufour.dk/blog-archives/mozilla/index.xml
Wordpress:
http://www.squarefree.com/categories/mozilla/
http://www.squarefree.com/categories/mozilla/feed/
And probably other blogging software too.
Also, if people have a specific category for stuff that goes on planet, then we can avoid stuff like "Joe just wrote a great post about Mozilla Barfoo - go check it out" when we've already read it on planet.
Justdave mentioned on IRC that he rather likes hearing what everyone else is up to. Perhaps we could segregate stuff so that we have planet.mozilla.org and planet.mozilla.org/people/ or something.
Any thoughts?
I already select the mozilla feeds for people who provide that sort of categorization of their blogs, and in the past have removed people if they don't do that and the majority of their items are non-mozilla related.
Yeah on reflection it was kind of a spur of the moment thing regarding tristan nott pointing out frank hecker's post. It doesn't happen all that often on planet, wheras now I look through the feeds, mozillazine feedhouse seems to have a bit of extra stuff on it.
I'm thinking invalid.
Despite the recent ranting about comment spam, nonsensical posts ("bet you can't...",) boasting about wine collections, discussion of wordpress plugin development, musings about writing in the shower and much else, I'm going to INVALID this, since you say you already monitor planet to maintain a decent signal:noise ratio.
I hate seeing vague, open bugs just hang around like this one.
