User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8.0.3) Gecko/20060504 Fedora/1.5.0.3-1.1.fc5 Firefox/1.5.0.3 pango-text Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8.0.3) Gecko/20060504 Fedora/1.5.0.3-1.1.fc5 Firefox/1.5.0.3 pango-text This is a log that I receive every night. It contains a line that has a lot of control characters, as that is the Cd burning progress from the console. When I go over it on the mail list it crashes X server completely. I have a fully upgraded FC5 with all the latest packages, nothing experimental. Interestingly Firefox can open the file, although some font rendering problem can be seen. This never happens on the windows versions. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.open thunderbird 2.go over the mail, or open it, if preview panel is disabled Actual Results: X server restarts, I get back to logon screen Expected Results: Show the content of the mail without crashing P4 3Ghz, Auss P4C800-E deluxe, Nvidia 6800Ultra, nvidia driver: kmod-nvidia-1.0.8762-1.2.6.16_1.2122_FC5 , kernel: 2.6.16-1.2122_FC5smp, Fedora Core 5
well, err. that's nice. i'm sorry that your xserver isn't very good. it looks like you're using fedora, so please contact them and ask for help debugging problems with their xserver. most likely they have a howto and debug libraries. if you're using xfree86's x server, then http://www.xfree86.org/current/README7.html#11 might be a starting point (not very useful as things go, but hey). if you're using Xorg's server, then https://bugs.freedesktop.org/describecomponents.cgi?product=xorg is eventually where your bug would go, after you read http://wiki.x.org/wiki/ and got lost somewhere. again, get help from your distro. think about it like this: if firefox loads web content on windows and the os blue screens, it's unfortunate that it happened, but it's the os+video card drivers that are at fault. it's the os's job to prevent firefox from bluescreening the system, and it generally does a good job, except when the os allows a sucky video card to take possibly bad requests from firefox. the same is true under linux. except when firefox eats too much memory and the oom killer decides to kill x (which it can do, but again, that's the os's fault for killing x, not firefox's. if the os was configured to give firefox an oom message instead, then maybe we'd handle it, or maybe not). note that i was able to use file>open w/ seamonkey1.5a(random nightly) on ubuntu dapper timeless@swift:~$ X -version X Window System Version 7.0.0 Release Date: 21 December 2005 X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0, Release 7.0 Build Operating System:Linux 2.6.12 i686 Current Operating System: Linux swift 2.6.16-1-686-smp #2 SMP Tue Apr 25 20:45:37 UTC 2006 i686 Build Date: 16 March 2006 Before reporting problems, check http://wiki.x.org to make sure that you have the latest version. Basically, as I wasn't able to find anyone who could've tell me the resolution back at the time, and since the newer versions don't suffer from this bug (was able to open 35 MB plaintext mail without any problem, with the same controlling characters in it), so I think it was fixed at some point and time.
