Gmail chat doesn't connect in trunk builds. There is an error message saying "We're experiencing technical difficulties that may prevent your chats from being sent".

This has been happening for some time, but that message sounds like a server issue, so I only just realized that this was a client-side bug when I noticed that 1.8 branch builds don't show the problem. I'll try to establish a regression window.
This is now working for me. Perhaps this was a server side issue of some sort, or is already fixed?
