Details

User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.0.4) Gecko/20060508 Firefox/1.5.0.4
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.0.4) Gecko/20060508 Firefox/1.5.0.4

Thunderbird 1.5.0.2

This occured twice. It is too painful to try again with 1.5.0.4 that just got download.

Setup:

Drive C: for programs and such
Drive D: for data

Set up user via profile manager to use mail structure>

d:/data/user/mail

config this up get it working in Thunderbird. Decide I don't like it. Exit Thunderbird. Restart Profile Manager. Select Delete Profile (in both occurances, only one profile existed). Hourglass hangs around for a long time. Finally ends.

All sorts of programs stop working properly.

Turns out that much (but not all?) of c:/Documents and Settings/User/ got deleted.

The first time I really paniced. Happened at the same time that an attack against NAV was published, so I did not know why. Using GoBack, I restored my drives and with a lot of pain got things stable.

Second time (4pm EDT 6/5) I decided to check Norton Protected Recycle Bin and found over 500 files there from /Documents and Settings directory. Recovering those files recovered my system.

Note that although I set up my Thunderbird profile to use d:/data/user/mail there were still directories created in /Documents and Settings/user

As far as which files were deleted, I suspect only those that were being used (or directories) by other active programs, as I can have a dozen programs running at any time. But I can't create a definitive list and this event was just too painful to force it a 3rd time.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Create first profile in separate drive/directory structure from c:/Documents and Settings/user
2.Use profile in Thunderbird
3.exit thunderbird start profile manager and remove profile
scary - sounds like a profile manager bug, however, not a thunderbird bug.

I think 1.5 TB used the toolkit profile manager - I don't know who owns this, but bsmedberg shows up in the checkin log the most, so he might know who owns this.
