The flash player plugin used in video.google.com causes Firefox to be slower and slower after several hours/a day (probably). Tab switching for example becomes slower and annoying. When refreshing the page, the tab switching becomes faster again.
Using Flash player 9 beta version 9,0,0,296 (Since it fixes bug 334322 )
If this is a flash plugin bug, please keep the bug open until it is fixed and only then mark as Invalid (as was done in bug 334322), in order to keep track of this issue which affects Firefox users.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Open several tabs of simple, static html content like www.mozilla.org, which is not supposed to cause performance problems.
2. Open http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-570288889128950913&q=ethanol in another tab. Wait until the video starts to play a few seconds, and stop it by pressing the pause button. Note: the video download continues to progress in the background, you can see this on the video progress bar after some time.
3. Wait until the progress bar indicates the video completed loading. Make many switches between tabs by clicking the mouse on them. There is a small delay in tab switching (barely unnoticeable, but much slower than without google video affect, you can see this by refreshing the page, pausing again, and switching tabs - now much faster), and from time to time 1 out of several switches has a longer delay.
4. Wait another day. Tab switching gets very slow for every tab switch.
5. Refresh the google video page. Pause again after several seconds of video play. Switch between the other tabs that are not of video.google.com - now the switching is fast and immediate.

Actual Results:
Firefox is less responsive and slower. Can be seen by trying Tab switching.

Expected Results:
Fast tab switching

Do you see similar results if you test bug 289198's description? If yes, then dup this to bug 289198.

the poor performance is not player performance, but related to FF allocated memory much larger than your available real memory, and related memory issues.

The Flash Player team was unable to reproduce this bug back with the original Flash Player 9 release, using Firefox 1.5.
michelle, are you inferring you DID reproduce this with FF 2?

niv, can you also reproduce with FF 1.5? And, is it better, or worse, with a trunk build? does it change if you run flash 9.0 r28 versus the beta?

A testcase that fails on FF2 bug works on FF1.5 would be interesting.

After 20 minutes I average 50k memory used per minute with FF2 and flash 9.0 r28.

Summary: video.google.com: firefox slows down after some time due to flash player → video.google.com: firefox slows down after some time due to flash player - high cpu and memory
The Flash Player team is unable to reproduce the bug as originally described. We tested in Firefox 1.5 and 2.0.
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.2) Gecko/20070219 Firefox/2.0.0.2
Flash Version 8,0,22,0
-and-
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.8.1.3) Gecko/20070309 Firefox/2.0.0.3
Flash Version 9,0,45,0

with the above versions the flash URL actually uses less memory than the average flash and compares favorably to IE. mem usage after 20 minutes is stone dead flat. It may have been the beta version of flash. Or if there is a problem (which is rather impossible to recreate with just one URL) I doubt this URL is a required step to reproduce.
