Follow-up bug on bug 341273, comment 13:

>> I kinda like Gandalf's version with it in tiny type at the bottom of the
footer. :) <<
There is no need to display the version on each page. This brings no value and takes place, and most users simply want to use Bugzilla and knowing the version of the application won't help them. Developers who want to interact with Bugzilla need to know this information, but they can look at the home page or use our WebServices API to get this information. It's like asking Firefox to display its version in each tab. If you want this information, there is a single place to find it, Help > About.

It really would be a great help if Bugzilla puts its version number (not just 1.2.3, but including the most fine-grained build identifier available) in the footer. Usually, one doesn't care, but when one discovers that *this instance* is mucking up, it helps a great deal. Of course, that event is rare, so one does not carefully memorize how to find Bugzilla's version number.

And saying "they can look at the home page" does not help, because it's not true, or at least, it's not always true -- this Bugzilla's home page (https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/) doesn't have a version number on it.

It does, at the upper right corner.

no, it isn't visible in the default skin. i've filed bug 945932 to address that.

I've stared at it quite a bit, and I can't see it. Firefox's search function couldn't even find a "." on the page. Can you look at the "screen capture" attachment and tell me what I'm overlooking?

glob already answered in comment 5: the default (bmo-specific) skin doesn't have it. But the (upstream) Dusk skin has it (which you have access to once you are logged in), which is why I can see it but no you. :)

Well, I'm not familiar with the various skins and who uses which one. But that is a form of my point, if people are likely to remove the version number from the one place it displays, it would provide improved functionality if it were put in the footer, where people are less likely to mess with it.

This doesn't change anything. It can still be removed. The rationale has already been given in comment 2. We won't change it back.
