Every time I restart my macbook running 10.4.7, I can't open firefox until I rerun "firefox 1.5.0.4.dmg". The firefox disc drive icon on the desktop disappears, the FF icon still shows in the dock,. but when I click on it, a grey question mark appears in the icon and nothing happens.

That sounds rather like you aren't dragging the icon from the opened dmg to your Applications folder, the way the background image tries to tell you to do. If doing that doesn't work, you'll find that http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewforum.php?f=38 works better for support issues like this.
