It's not consistent (it happens once a month), but sometimes Thunderbird will go into a catatonic state when it's been running through a sleep/wake cycle on my PowerBook G4. I've seen it in 1.0, 1.5, 1.5.0.2 and 1.5.0.4.

What happens is that the shading on the mailbox list is wrong, no icons appear in the mailbox list, mail doesn't get retrieved, all the menu items don't work, there is no content in the application or Apple menus, and you can't quit. You have to force-quit it (thus the "critical" appellation above).

The kicker is that you can start and restart it all you want--it always comes up catatonic. Sometimes the catatonia survives across the restart of the machine. I've not figured out how to cure it; it's just gone away in the past.

I dread leaving Thunderbird running during a sleep. My email's important, and the last thing I need is for my email app to decide not to work and have to risk losing my mail because of the forced shutdowns.

Rebooting doesn't help; it seems to be some scrambling of the preference data in a file somewhere.

I finally got it to unjam by launching 1.5.0.2. It opened the compatibility window, I clicked OK, and then it went catatonic. I reran 1.5.0.4, it opened and then immediately closed the compatibility window, and then worked.

Curiously, I lost the sort order in the front window and had to reestablish it.
