Maithili (mai-IN) is one of the most important language spoken in the eastern part in India. This in one of the scheduled language by government of India. So I am eager to start the localisation process for the language.

Johannes, I suggest that you don't comment in registration bugs.

http://developer.mozilla.org/en/docs/Create_a_new_localization is a better reference.

We have a few other teams working on indic languages, I suggest getting in contact with at least some of them. That should help in terms of common problems for indic languages, of which I expect to see more than a few.
