Yahoo says it will now only permit smtp mail to be sent from a small number of products, e.g Netscape, Outlook and OE. Will Mozilla petition Yahoo to add TB to its list. Thanks

Where can I look this up? Got a link for that story?

Johannes Buchner asked where I heard that Yahoo is not allowing smtp mail from TB - I found it under Yahoo Help where it says:
# Errors Sending Mail (SMTP)
The Yahoo! Mail SMTP server now requires authentication. To learn how to configure your email program, please choose from the following supported programs:Netscape Messenger 4 and higherMicrosoft Outlook 98, 2000, and 2002Outlook Express 4 and higherOutlook Express
Thanks for looking into this.

I think that just means you need to provide a user name and password to the yahoo smtp server - go into account settings for your smtp server and check the box that says the server requires authentication.

I have been using TB to send mail via yahoo for over a year and never had problems until about ten days ago. I then tried ticking the 'use secure authentication' button, but that did not help.
It may be helpful if I mention that about the time I started having problems several other TB users also posted messages on the forum that they were having problems sending mail even though they, like myself, coud still receive via TB.
It seems that Yahoo is just limiting smtp access to certain specified products; though why they should deny TB is a mystery.

sorry, I didn't mean "use secure authentication" - I meant
under Security and Authentication:
check - Use name and password, and enter your yahoo user name.
That error message you point out doesn't say that access to the yahoo smtp server is limited to those e-mail clients. It just says it will tell you how to configure those e-mail clients to access the smtp server.
Yahoo smtp does not know what e-mail client is accessing it.

I think this means they only provide support (help) for these products (Configuration, Screenshots, etc.), not that they hate all others.

Exactly. It's all standard rfc, so you wont be able to distinguish very well between the clients (and there would be a extension soon to make thunderbird act like Outlook).
Not a bug.
