"Add Star" doesn't appear to do anything (visually)

I have a filter that is supposed to "add star" and I manually added the star to a couple messages, but i don't see a star anywhere.

I believe the message is getting starred because when I go the the message | mark context menu, "add star" is checked.

Oh my starry eyed surprise, sundown to sunrise
it marks the message as flagged.
