Image of my mail window after I deleted the first message in a two-message thread
Today I've seen several instances of odd behavior when viewing message threads. Earlier, I saw a thread of perhaps 5 messages clone itself into two separate threads when I deleted one of the elements.
Just now I had a thread of 2 messages, and I deleted the first message. I'll attach a screenshot to show what I saw.
Note that in that screenshot, the message status was set to New, the Subject and Sender were removed, and the date was set way back.

Similar to bug 169481 except for the change-of-date issue.
Did you try leaving the folder and returning? I'm curious if the changed date persisted.
