Details

User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1b1) Gecko/20060804 BonEcho/2.0b1 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1b1) Gecko/20060804 BonEcho/2.0b1 The new searchbar has a fixed height, which does not enlarge to accommodate larger text sizes. Some of our users are old - like me - and require larger text sizes (Jerry Pournelle identified this need in various Byte columns dating back nearly 20 years). Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. In Windows OS, right-click on desktop. 2. Choose the Properties menuitem from the context menu 3. Select "Advanced" 4. Select Message Box 5. Change font size to 20 points. 6. OK your way back to the desktop. Actual Results: Text does not fit in searchbar. Text is cut off. Expected Results: Searchbar should have extended to accommodate the larger text. I fear for the urlbar next, since I am looking at the Go button, which shares the same shape as the Search button and thus implies that the urlbar will also have a fixed vertical size. We cannot abandon our older users. Even though I make Big and Jumbo themes for users with visual difficulties, most of our older users are not yet used to exploring the capacities of a browser to adapt it to their needs (some absurdly large percentage of all computers are left in their default settings). Windows has special Windows themes that provide larger text. IE has no problem with them. This new limitation, if left unchanged in Fx 2.0, will drive many of our older users back to IE. The discussion in Google Groups was all about refreshing the look of the browser, not any real need in the UI. IMO, it is not much of a reason to drive away users.
