Steps to reproduce:
- Start a branch build with 300 days of history and a large history.dat file
- in Tools > Options uncheck "Remember visited pages for the last 600 days"
- Go to a site
- Restart Firefox
- Check the same option again and change it to 300 days again (necessary because it has changed to 9 days)
- Visit a site
- In the sidebar you'll see this as the only visited page in months
- Close Firefox
- Watch your history.dat file
Result: it has changed from 3,56 MB to 2,31 KB.

Ehm, the expected behaviour is that it should stop registering pages as long as the option "Remember.." is checked but not delete your entire history but maybe I misunderstood the pref based on the behaviour in trunk builds.

I meant unchecked

In trunk this works like expected so either branch or trunk is showing wrong behaviour.

Has the mork-based history implementation always worked this way? In other words, is this a regression from 1.5?

The check box was not yet present those days.
In branch checking the "Remember"-box or changing the amount of days to 0 seems to do the same: it deletes the history.
In trunk it makes a whole new feature.

Right, I'm asking whether setting the history days to "0" in Firefox 1.5 deletes your history. IIRC, it does.

Can you please update to a recent and supported version, create a new profile (see http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Basic%20Troubleshooting#w_8-make-a-new-profile and http://support.mozilla.org/kb/Managing%20profiles for more information), and test this again?
If you still see this problem in the new profile, please add a comment to this report and tell us your exact version (by updating the "Version" field of this bug report) and your operating system (Windows, Mac OS, Linux, etc.).
If the problem still happens but does not happen in the new profile, please enter the address "about:support" in the address bar and attach (using the "Add an attachment" link above) the output for your original profile (not the new profile), as the "Modified Preferences" section could be interesting.
If the problem does not happen anymore at all, please set the status of this report to RESOLVED > WORKSFORME. Thanks for your help!

I'm not active anymore on bugzilla since several years and I don't test Firefox anymore. :) So please resolve this bug like you want. Receiving every day a notification is really irritating, even in the trash box.
