Does it still hang if you start in safe mode? http://kb.mozillazine.org/Safe_mode

Gary, are you using a proxy to connect to the internet? If yes, are you using some autoconfiguration url?

Peter, I solved this issue by uninstalling and re-installing the software.
I too have this issue, Firefox will freeze as soon as it is opened, I have tried safe mode, it hangs as well, and uninstalling did nothing.

Chris, does creating a new profile remedy the hang? http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_manager
Also, which version of Firefox are you using?
Severity: critical → major
I was having the same problem. Regular mode, safe mode, it would hang on start up and not recover. I uninstalled and reinstalled repeatedly. Nothing worked.
Today, I created a new profile, ditching the default profile. I'm so glad I never got rid of Mozilla Suite, as I was able to import my bookmarks and passwords to the new profile. I still have no idea what was causing the hang. Or why simply creating a new profile fixed it.

Confirmed!
I'm behind a corporate proxy using PAC file as autoconfiguration URL.
