in Gmail, under "Quick Contacts" it says "unable to reach Gmail, check your internet connection"

Steps to Reproduce:
1.goto Gmail
2. look under Quick Contacts
3.

Actual Results:  
it does not connect to my quick contacts list

Expected Results:  
it should show whos online,etc

Gmail is having server issues as per the notice on their front page:  "We're sorry, but Gmail is temporarily unavailable. We're currently working to fix the problem -- please try logging in to your account in a few minutes."

thats not it, i keep getting the message: Unable to reach Gmail. Please check your internet connection.

Yes, it is. chatenabled.mail.google.com (where the Quick Contact list is fetched from) is down. Therefore, it's not a problem with Firefox. If you continue to have issues, contact Google for support.
