Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.0.5) Gecko/20060719 Firefox/1.5.0.5
When starting Thunderbird and displaying the list of messages in the inbox (or any other folder), I might have a number of unread messages. When clicking on any of the unread messages (usually the first), the message display window stays blank. Selecting the next message will succesfully display the selected message, and so on and so on until all messages are marked as read _except_ the first message you tried to view, which will keep displaying a blank window when selected.
Thunderbird works normally in the meantime, and when you retry in approximately 5 minutes, the message will display correctly.
I can confirm this behaviour on Windows XP SP2, Thunderbird 1.5.0.3 to 1.5.0.5.
The server we're talking to in this case is Exchange 2003 SP2, using IMAP.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Start Thunderbird
2. Select a folder with unread messages
3. Read various unread messages
Actual Results:
Either the first or the last message will not display for approx. 5 minutes.
Expected Results:
Message should display directly.

It turns out that this might be related to the "Maximum number of server connections to the cache" setting in Tools -> Account Settings -> Server Settings -> Advanced.
This is set to 8 by default. setting this to 32 fixes the delays. I don't know why this happens, but it works!

it should be set to 5 by default. 32 is awfully high

Turns out this does not work. I don't know what happened exactly, but after setting this to a high value (32), it did remove the delay from reading the first last unread message in the inbox. It even worked after a few restarts, so I (mistakenly) thought this was a good workaround.
However, next day at work I found that the delays were back again. regardless of a high or low value in "Maximum number of server connections to the cache".

Wayne, I can't confirm if this is still an issue because I'm not using Thunderbird in combination with Exchange IMAP anymore.
