Go to a page like http://www.mozilla.org/projects/intl/xul-how2l10n.htm that makes the horizontal scrollbar appear. Why are there tiny dots below the vertical lines on the horizontal scrollbar grip? They look almost like exclamation points. To be consistent, either the horizontal scrollbar grip should not have these dots, or the vertical scrollbar grip should.

I had a look at this on two different windows boxes, and I don't see this. However, there is dithering at the tip of these lines, which show up as blue tips at 256 colors and 800x600. Passing to bdonohoe/UI Design for assessment.

Sorry about the incorrect URL; it's http://www.mozilla.org/projects/intl/xul- how2l10n.html (the other was missing the ending "l"). In any event, I'm on Win98 SE, latest available M14 Win32 nightly build [2000040708]. 800 x 600 and High Color (16-bit). I've attached a screenshot so you can see what I'm seeing. Look under the vertical lines of the horizontal scrollbar grip, you'll see tiny (but noticeable) dots.

Problem has returned with 2000042608 and recent nightlies. No one else with win98 sees this?

Must be some missing detail that's causing it to occur on some machines and not others. Either way, it's not a design issue, but a right proper bug. Reassigning to XP Toolkit/Widgets.

Can people who have seen this mis-shapen thumb (image) just try loading chrome://global/skin/scroll-thumb-horiz.gif and see if that looks distorted. [It should be 11px high with the middle nine pixels being black, and the outer two a dark grey]. Thanks!

I don't see the dots in the image, looks fine and just as it should.

It looks fine when you type in the url in mozilla. It looks fine when you view the image in a paint program. You get the horizontal gray line when its used on the slider in the HSB.

I just modified the gif so it was a black square the same size. No gray dots in it - if that means anything.

Wait, are we talking about two different problems here? I'm not sure if I see a gray line, but Neil, do you see the three tiny dots that are shown in the screenshot?
Comment 20•24 years ago
|
||
yes. When looking at the image, there are no dots there. In the browser there are, but when I modified the image to be a complete black square, they dissapeared.
Comment 21•24 years ago
|
||
Wait... I modified the image again :) I have a black square. With a gray line along the bottom. What I see in the browser is a black square with a gray line one pixel up from the bottom. With a little more testing it looks like this is an opacity problem. Where the extra black dots at the bottom (In the origional) are showing, the gif is actually supposed to be transparent. In scroll-right-hover.gif, there is one row of transparent pixels at the very bottom.

It appears that the image is stretched from 11px to 13px high (due to padding used on the scroll-left|right.gif that gives it onmousedown movement). Why this stretching of the GIF in the thumb xbl causes some distortion on some systems, I don't know (but if there is anything unusual about the affected systems (DPI, color depth, video cards) that might make the difference). I don't know who should get this: ben, german or evaughan. (It is, of course, not a major issue to resolve soon).

I don't see it either, but in any case we have no time to fix bugs like this, targetting M30, help wanted.

Neil, out of curiosity, what color are you at? I was at True Color (32-bit)...when I switched to High Color (16 bit) under Win98, I didn't see the dots in the horizontal scrollbar; I also didn't see them once I switched back to 32bit True Color. Please be aware, however, that I'm in no way suggesting that the temporary switch to High Color is what made the dots disappear; I'm not sure if I ever looked in 2000050208 *before* switching to High Color to see if they were still there anyways.
