Are you sure it worked that easily in Firefox? Firefox also can only use dictionary at a time and does not do any auto detection of the language entered. What happened in Firefox when you entered French and English words in the same textarea? Maybe you have to switch the language in the preferences window in SeaMonkey to switch to French (Mail & Newsgroups->Composition)? Maybe there will be better UI for that some time.
