User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.0.7) Gecko/20060909 Firefox/1.5.0.7
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.0.7) Gecko/20060909 Firefox/1.5.0.7
When I reply to a message and delete some text out of the originaly quoted message up to the very end of the message and then add text at the end of the message again, an extra newline automatically appears when I start typing.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
I have Thunderbird set to quote the original message inline on reply.
When I hit reply I see the original message (indented with '>').
I then move the cursor to the middle of the quoted message.
I hit Home to ensure I'm at the beginning of the line.
I then hit Ctrl-Shift-End to mark the message to the very end.
I then hit Del to remove that part.
I then hit arrow down.
The cursor doesn't move down, because there are no more lines!
I then type any character.
Now an extra newline magically is inserted before the typed letter.
Actual Results:
extra newline before typed character
Expected Results:
no extra newline, but just the typed character

I can reproduce this using 1.5.0.7 (typing the down-arrow is a necessary step), but 2a1-0912 and 3a1-0915 behave correctly.
However, I have seen a very similar symptom under perhaps-varying circumstances, where I'm typing and (perhaps) have just used backspace or ctrl+backspace; then I type again, and suddenly I'm on a new paragraph with two newlines between where the caret is and where it was. Since I'm mostly using nightly builds these days, I can't say if that's happening with 1.5, but I've seen it in both 2a1 and 3a1 builds.
The same problem appears when you do the following:
Steps to Reproduce:
I have Thunderbird set to quote the original message inline on reply.
When I hit reply I see the original message (indented with '>').
I then move the cursor to the middle of the quoted message.
I hit Home to ensure I'm at the beginning of the line.
I then hit Ctrl-Shift-End to mark the message to the very end.
DIFFERENCE: I then hit Enter (not Del) to remove that part and type a newline at the same time. This deletes the part, but seamingly doesn't include the newline. When I type a character, an extra newline appears.

I see that symptom with 2a1, but not with 3a1: on the trunk, when you type the Enter to delete the text, the caret appears on the second line after the remaining quote (a blank line automatically included), and when typing starts, there is no unexpected jump.

I am using TBird 1.5.0.10 (as of this afternoon) on Windows 2000 SP4,Rollup1.
I see similar behavior to that described by several msgs in this group,
but I don't have to delete to get the inserted newline. It seems to be inserted
any time I type after waiting more than a few seconds with the cursor at the
left edge. I thought this might be "intended" behavior, but I cannot find any
description of it, nor any option to turn it off.
The closest thing I found was the Config Editor variable
editor.singleLine.pasteNewlines. But that seems to be something else.
Anybody know how to kill it?

I am using TBird 2.0.0.12 (20080213) on Windows Vista, but have been getting this bug for sometime, consistently (since I was on Windows XP, a few months back).
Steps to reproduce:
Type some text. Even one line will do.
Go home, or to some earlier spot.
Hit End, or Ctrl-End, to go to the bottom of the document.
Start typing. The new text will appear on a new line.
It's like there's a hidden newline character at the end of the email, and "Ctrl-End" takes me past that, even though I don't see it there. Maybe this is the desired behaviour, but it's not what I expect.

Malte Finsterwalder, Lloyd Rice and Peter Hollo, could you try to see if it still happens with
http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/thunderbird/nightly/latest-comm-1.9.1/ ?
It seems WFM here on
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.1.3pre) Gecko/20090824 Lightning/1.0pre Shredder/3.0b4pre ID:20090824110932

I still get this bug using 2.0.0.22 on Win2K. If I understand what you're asking, Malte, it would be that I reinstall your version "latest-comm-1.9.1", and then check whether the bug is still there. I do not have an extra machine handy that I could try that without disrupting operations.

Tested here using the latest nightly above and it WFM. Great!
I'm using Windows XP here at work.
(Can't change to the Shredder nightly yet mind you because of a few extension incompatibilities, but it looks nice!)

WFM based on #9 and #7. 2.X is a security fix and maintainance branch it's very unlikely that what fixed this bug ends up backported to the 2.x branch.
