User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.2; en-US; rv:1.8.0.7) Gecko/20060909 Firefox/1.5.0.7 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.2; en-US; rv:1.8.0.7) Gecko/20060909 Firefox/1.5.0.7 My Thunderbird client was updated via the "Software Update" dialog some time ago. Every time I log in (or almost), I get the same "Software Update" dialog: A new version of Thunderbird is available: Thunderbird 1.5.0.7. It is strongly recommended that you upgrade thunderbird as soon as possible. Help/About shows: version 1.5.0.7 (20060916) Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Install some version of Thunderbird before 1.5.0.7 or 1.5.0.7 2. Click on Help/Software Updates. It should say "no software updates available" or some such message Instead, you always get: " A new version of Thunderbird is available: Thunderbird 1.5.0.7. It is strongly recommended that you upgrade thunderbird as soon as possible." even though 1.5.0.7 is already installed. Actual Results: The system doesn't recognize 1.5.0.7 Thunderbird is already installed. Expected Results: The system should recognize 1.5.0.7 Thunderbird is already installed. This is on Windows Server 2003. Software Updates should recognize the version of the software.
Version: unspecified → 1.5
see bug 353291 comment 1 (although that one is for Firefox)
Changed Severity from "Major" to "Normal". More annoying than anything else. Would be nice if this was slipstreamed into the next 1.5.0.x build. From similar bug 353291 - Firefox.. >> the UI will say 1.5.0.7 but the exe is 1.5.0.6, and the latter is used for the version when requesting updates.<< I guess it's possible the stub isn't getting replaced but isn't that an installer bug (Firefox or Thunderbird)? I can see that it doesn't affect the application (the stub not getting replaced) except that it keeps prompting for update. If it's not seen in Task Manager (ie locked), it's strange that the installer doesn't update the stub. If I remember correctly, after the first update, Thunderbird 1.5.0.7 "Help/About" said 1.5.0.7 20060915 (9/15). When it proceeded to update again (1.5.0.7) again, it recorded 20060916 (9/16) in the Help/About so I thought someone slipstreamed-in a security fix. The repro steps probably require having 1.5 installed first and not 1.5.0.7 installed, then click "Get Updates", let it update, then close Thunderbird and let it try again. It shows "no updates available" (or some such message) for me from the MENU PICK. I think it's the AUTOMATED update part (in the preferences) that gets it wrong - like some REGISTRY setting isn't getting twiddled.

To add to my bug description. Just confirmed the binary (thunderbird.exe) is also 1.5.0.7 when the popup for 1.5.0.7 update occurs. We thought that might be an influence (that the updater checks the binary) ListDLLs shows the internal version as: (along with other DLLs loaded) 0x00400000 0x78f000 1.08.20060.26268 C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\thunderbird.exe 0x60090000 0x69000 4.00.0000.0000 C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\js3250.dll 0x60160000 0x27000 4.06.0001.0000 C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\nspr4.dll 0x60320000 0x65000 1.08.20060.26268 C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\xpcom_core.dll 0x60230000 0x7000 4.06.0001.0000 C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\plc4.dll 0x60240000 0x6000 4.06.0001.0000 C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\plds4.dll 0x60250000 0x1a000 3.10.0002.0000 C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\smime3.dll 0x60190000 0x59000 3.10.0002.0000 C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\nss3.dll 0x60270000 0x5a000 3.10.0002.0000 C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\softokn3.dll 0x602d0000 0x1b000 3.10.0002.0000 C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\ssl3.dll 0x60120000 0x23000 C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\NSLDAP32V50.dll 0x60150000 0x6000 C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\NSLDAPPR32V50.dll 0x60300000 0x14000 1.08.20060.26268 C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\xpcom_compat.dll 0x60010000 0x12000 1.08.20060.26268 C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\components\jar50.dll 0x10000000 0x6000 1.08.20060.26268 C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\extensions\talkback@mozilla.org\components\qfaservices.dll 0x017b0000 0x25000 2.02.0000.0000 C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\extensions\talkback@mozilla.org\components\FULLSOFT.DLL 0x601f0000 0x3a000 1.53.0000.0000 C:\PROGRA~1\MOZILL~2\nssckbi.dll
For FireFox.exe -> 1.5.0.7 The 'File Version' property is: 1.8.0.7: 2006090918 For Thunderbird.exe -> 1.5.0.7 The 'File Version' property is: 1.8.0.8pre: 2006092005 The versions look correct. Is the automatic updater possibly checking the "File Version" too? The Registry keys: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Mozilla\Mozilla Thunderbird 1.5.0.7 and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Mozilla\Mozilla FireFox 1.5.0.7 have: GeckoVer=1.8.0.7
Thunderbird 1.5.0.x is no longer supported. Please comment if the issue still occurs in the latest supported Thunderbird 2.0.0.x or trunk nightlies.
