Subscribed to newsgroups:
Clicking on a previously subscribed to newsgroup produces a dialog box asking if we would like to subscribe to that newsgroup.
Mark as Read:
Marking a newsgroup as read appears to work at first. Closing Thunderbird and reopening it returns to the previously unread state.
Unsubscribe from a newsgroup:
Works, apparently, or at least until Thunderbird is restarted. All previously "unsubscribed" newsgroups remain. (Appears to have a long memory for subscriptions, until you click on a newsgroup to read it, and none at all for unsubscriptions.)
Subscribing from a newsgroup link:
This creates a new news account associated with whatever organization they are from (E.G. the Thunderbird ones set you up with a new account using the news.mozilla.org server) Which is not quite as distressing as the fact that a completely phantom news account not populated by any server information named simply "News" appears along with it.
Have tested all of these with the latest public release (1.5.0.7) as well as the latest daily build. Repeatable. In fact, the separate installation of the daily build I have retains all configuration information from the release build.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Subscribe to a couple busy newsgroups (try something not of Mozilla for grins)
2. Click on one of them to read it (Would you like to subscribe to this newsgroup?)
3. Mark it as read.
4. Close and reopen Thunderbird. (Hmm... look at all the new messages)
5. Unsubscribe a newsgroup.
6. Close and reopen Thunderbird. (Wow.... Free newsgroup.. lets look at it (Would you like to subscribe...... ? Click on the cancel button because I'm apparently already subscribed. Golly! Holy hourglass Batman!))
Actual Results:
See reproduction steps
Expected Results:
1. Expected to see news topic headers instead of a box askin me to subscribe.
2. Expected not to see messages previously marked as read again.... Ever.
3. Expected unsubscribed newsgroups to forget I was ever born.

Gah, one issue per bug, please!
Questions:
Subscribe: is this a subscription by URI, or are clicking in the folder pane?
Mark as Read: See bug 71728, especially all its deps.
Unsubscribe: Your newsrc is probably not being flushed. Wait about 10 minutes before closing TB.
Subscribe from URI: This is known (is it a news:<group> or a (shudder) news://<server>/<group> or news:<server>/<group> ?) and can be tracked by deps of bug 108948.
Taiz, do you still see these problems with TB 2.0.0.14 or recent trunk TB builds? If I receive no response in three weeks, I will close this bug in 3 weeks as RESO INCO.
