Actual Results: Now go to the Bookmarks menu. "Hide bookmarks" is available, and hides the history if clicked. Expected Results: "Show bookmarks" should be available, and should show the bookmarks. "Hide bookmarks" should not be available unless the bookmarks are showing. Related to bug 266394
History is a subset of the bookmarks manager. I can see an argument for changing the text to "Hide Bookmarks Manager", but this is by design. WONTFIX. For anybody watching on the sidelines, confusions like this are exactly the reason I think we should fix bug 311781.

Yeah, I think the fundamental issue here is really 'The relationship between the bookmarks display and the history display is unclear to the user'. Personally, I would never have guessed that the correct way to close the history window is to go to the bookmarks menu and click 'hide bookmarks'. There is a hidden concept of a 'bookmark manager' that is apparent if you look at the code, but is not made clear to the user.
For the record, we're looking into ways to make this better, although we haven't had any brilliant ideas yet.
