When I run the latest nightly (26-Sep-2006) of Firefox on Ubuntu Edgy nightly, I notice that menus inside menus are sometimes reported as menu items.  For example, I have a "Bookmarks" menu that has a sub-menu called "Ubuntu and Free Software links".  When I look at the "Ubuntu and Free Software links" menu via at-poke, it shows up as a menu item instead of a menu.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. See details.

Actual Results:  
Submenus of menus sometimes show up with a role of "menu item".  This seems to happen primarily in the Bookmarks menu.

Expected Results:  
Submenus should show up with a role of "menu".

I should also add that when looking at these kinds of menu items in at-poke, they have no children.  But, when I get a handle to one of the children of these submenus, the submenu is shown as being their parent.

I think these kinds of bugs have the same root cause as Bug 246985.
We had a workaround before.
But it only worked sometimes. We had removed the workaround because of some regressions.

Keep in mind, however, that there may be two different problems here.  One is not being able to get to the children (the potential duplicate), and the other is that the incorrect role is being used: "menu item" versus "menu" (which may be a different bug).  I don't understand enough about that was going on in the potential duplicate to know if these two problems are related.
