Using build 2000-04-11-08 & -09 on win98, mac and linux the Quote button in the Compose window while Forwarding a message doesn't do anything. Per spec: Use the "Quote" feature when Replying or Forwarding (even though quoting for Forwarding is not a Preference or included in the Forward drop down menu, users can quote a message being forwarded by clicking on the "Quote" button once they have started a Forward message). Sorry, I couldn't find an open bug on the Quote Button w/Forward. If this is a dup please resolve it as so. Per description of Quote button in spec: For Reply and Forward, inserts the text of the parent message. 1. Launch Mail 2. Select a mail message 3. Click Forward , a Message Compose window will come up with the Subject correctly filled in. 4. Click on the Quote Button Result: no text is inserted, messge appears to be blank Expected: per spec, the text from the parent message to be inserted with the quoted bar 5. Send message 6. Get message Result: message has original text but it's not quoted Expected: the original text to display with the quote bar in front of it.
Reassigning to jglick, as I was told Forward quoting is out. Spec needs updating or rewriting.

My understanding is that that Forward Quoted would no longer be available as an automatic option for Forwarding a message. That means that Forward Quoted wouldn't be available as a pref or from the Forward button (hold and get drop down). But I thought that we were still allowing users to quote a message, whether that be composing a New, Reply or Forward message, by clicking on the Quote button. Is this wrong? Are we not doing Quote at all anymore? Or just not for Forwarding messages? Does the Quote button only work if the user is Replying to or Composing a New mail message? When the user Forwards, the Quote button should be disabled? Is that correct?

This button needs to work unless we're going to remove it. I don't think we're removing it. Jefft, is this yours? I would have thought it was Jean-Francois... Marking M16 since this is feature work.

I don't think this is mine, but I guess I can take it assuming that I am not too full. In theory, Quote button should work on all situations, New, Reply or Forward. It depends on what's the message selection you are having at the time the user press the Quote button. It should work with the whole message as a whole or a range of text selection.
Current status for Quote button with 5-01 m16 builds is that it's disabled on all platforms. However: On Mac and Linux, the quoted text is sent but is not visible while composing the forwarded message. On win98 the quoted text is sent and is also visible while composing the forwarded message.
Retraction on current status mentioned above. The forwarded messages are not quoting the text, my mistake their displaying inline. However, the Quote button is disabled now and should be enabled.

Update: to understand how to test this functionality (with a simple mail message)when this is fixed, the current behavior for the Quote button in a Forwarded message for 4.7 is: 1.) When preference is set for Forward as Inline and the user selects a message then clicks Forward, the message body is displayed in the body of the Forward Msg window. If user then clicks the Quote button it will now add the text again, above the header information, this time quoted (so the text is displayed twice during composition). 2. When preference is set for Forward as Attachment and the user selects a message then clicks Forward, the message body has no content. If user then clicks the Quote button it will now add the text from the message being quoted to the new message body and quote it (so the text is displayed once during composition). When received, both messages sent using the above scenarios, will have the original text twice (once quoted, the other not quoted)

Per Steve Elmer, I minus this bug. We wont support the menu/button Quote for B3. I will file a new bug for removing any UI related to it.

Should this be marked invalid since Quote doesn't currently appear on the Toolbar?
