Firefox is my default browser. I try to open a pdf file on a website or as an email attachment. An Adobe Acrobat error box pops up and says: "Cannot use Adobe Reader to view pdf in your web browser. Reader will now exit. Please press the refresh button in your browser to start Acrobat." I say OK. I hit refresh. I get the error message again. I CAN open the pdf files in Netscape. This problem is new: I downloaded your latest Firefox to my PC at work last week and set Firefox as my default browser. I use Firefox (earlier version) on my Mac at home and do not have this problem.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open email that has a pdf attachment or website that has a link to a pdf file
2. Click to open pdf file
3. Adobe Acrobat error box pop ups
4. Click OK
5. Click refresh
6. Adobe Acrobat error box pops up again
Expected Results:
File should open

Having the same problem in Suse 9.3 using Firefox 1.5.0.7-1.1 Worked fine until the updateand then...exactly as described below, every time. .pdf's can be right-clicked and saved into the bin for opening and reading in Adobe, but it's a pretty kludgy work-around.

1-
The latest Acrobat Reader available for Windows XP is 7.0.8. See Help/About Adobe Reader when the Acrobat Reader standalone application is loaded, opened.
Please make sure you're using the latest.
Download:
http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/windows.html#Acrobat
2-
In Firefox, type in
about:plugins
to see the installed plugins on your system. The installed plugins list should indicate
Adobe Acrobat
Filename: nppdf32.dll
Type MIME Description
application/pdf Acrobat Portable Document Format
3-
Open up Acrobat Reader standalone application and then please verify:
Edit/Preferences.../Internet/Web Browser Options/Display PDF in browser
checkbox must be checked
4-
"I try to open a pdf file on a website or as an
email attachment."
You can open up a pdf file from an attachment into Acrobat Reader if it is configured to do so. Thunderbird must be configured to know what to do with .pdf attachments:
Tools/Options.../Attachments/Actions on file types/View and modify actions...
must list pdf files.
Over here, I can load linked/referenced pdf files in Firefox 1.5.0.7.

I've already checked the plugin status in "about:plugins". It confirms that the plugin is there: application pdf/Portable Document Format/pdf/Yes (enabled). I've also verifed in "Preferences" that .pdf files are "Open with Adobe Reader 7.0". It still doesn't work.

Are you using the latest Acrobat Reader available for Windows XP which is version 7.0.8?
Do you have Thunderbird configured to know what to do with .pdf attachments?
Do you use a personal firewall? Have you configured it to allow Acrobat Reader to access internet, to fetch documents?
Is your problem with opening .pdf files recent?
Did the problem occur right after installing Firefox 1.5.0.7?
Can you try this =~ 52 KB page:

Lisa, I got your email
> Thank you for your email.
> The problem occurred after I installed Mozilla Firefox and Mozilla Mailman.
> We REinstalled Adobe Reader yesterday and it solved the problem. (I
> already had the latest version, but reinstallation solved the problem.)
> So, it looks like a reinstallation of Adobe may be needed when Firefox
> and Mailman are installed.
> Thanks so much.

RESOLVED ????????
WORKS FOR ME ???????????
Here's a workaround for you. Use IE which doesn't exhibit the problem at all and requires no workaround.
Is that what you want ?
