That appears to be a message that was sent using UTF-8 encoding, but did not specify UTF-8 in the message headers. You can verify this using View | Message Source and looking for the Content-Type header. As a workaround, when you view such a message: View | Character Encoding | UTF-8 You might also try turning on Autodetection, which should automatically select the correct encoding for messages that don't specify the encoding: View | Character Encoding | Autodetect | Universal
