It's certainly true in 45.0!

The current rule for Thunderbird's UI is that static (or mostly-static) icons like "Get Messages", "Reply", etc shouldn't have color, but icons that indicate a potentially-changing status (e.g. read/unread, stars) should be colorful to make it easier to see the status at a glance. For 45, the most obvious violation of this rule is the Correspondents column. We're working on a fix to that in bug 1266126. Since this bug is very old and applies to 2.0, I'm going to close it. Please file new issues for anything you see wrong in the current version of Thunderbird.
