Current options for storage on copies of outgoing messages are very good but there is a simple addition that would be very useful. My proposal is that there be an element on the send message dialog that would allow you to overrule the account preferences for just the message being composed.

For example we have an email account for our support helpline. We want most of the messages we send to be logged in the sent folder. However, if we are sending a message to a suppliers support helpline we would like to keep all emails for that in one folder. That includes outgoing and incoming messages. It would be good to be able to choose on the send dialog where the message would be copied, rather that to have to find and move it after sending.

One simple surgestion would be to have a pop-up menu/drop down list for choosing the folder to store the copy into. This would be hiaracical just like those used in the settings dialog. It would contain all elements offered settings dialog and would default to that provided in the mail and newsgroup account settings for the account in question.

Actually, looking at the program currently there is an item on the options menu that says 'Send a copy to' which looks like it should do exactly this but having tried it it doesn't work.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
In terms of the options menu 'send a copy to' item

1. Select a folder from the menu while a compose window is open.
2. Compose and send the message.

Actual Results:
The copy is not saved in the selected folder and there is no way of seeing which folder was selected if you return to the menu.

Expected Results:
The sent message should be copied to the selected folder. When a folder is selected it should become checked on the menu, indicating the chosen option.

The copy is saved for me: TB 1.5.0.7, 2b1-1004, Win2K. I also checked and the destination folder is maintained even if the message is saved as a draft and then reopened.

This is a valid complaint. Did you try searching the folders for the copy of the sent message to verify that you hadn't selected the wrong folder from the menu?

Do you want to morph this bug into being about that problem?
Hmmm... you seem to be correct, it does work on the Mac also. OK, lets make this about not flagging the folder that has been selected. I've adjusted the summary of the bug to indicate the change. A couple of more thoughts on this issue.

As described before there should be a check mark against the folder it will save a copy to.

Given there is a default folder that copies get saved into defined in the preferences, it should be checked to start with.

It's probably going to be controversial but I think the menu is very devorced from the compose dialog. It would be better if this were a popup menu within the compose window. Perhaps along side the current popup for the drom address. You would also be able to see very simply where your copy was going to go with this option. With a menu you are going to have to search for the check mark.

Finally, the menu item name is not correct as it stands. It currently reads 'Send a copy to' but allows you to pick a folder. To be accurate you 'send' emails to 'addresses' and you 'copy' emails to 'folders'. The menu should read 'Save a copy in' or some such.
Summary: Allow copies of sent messages to be stored elsewhere on a per message basis. → Need to see which folder a copy will be saved into. Menu badly labeled.
Please open a separate bug about relabeling the menu.

One way this could be achieved would be to create a folder-picker widget as a compose-window toolbar item, similar to the available Priority dropdown. I guess this would be a widget like either the one in the Copies&Folders settings (old-style) or in the Filter Editor where a Move/Copy action is selected (new style, someday may be used in Copes&Folders as well).

fwiw, I dislike both of those; see bug 350962 comment 3, also bug 315367.
