Running Windows XP, logged on to company LAN via Cisco VPN over 1.5Mb ADSL connection. 

Recently upgraded from  1.0.3 to 1.0.5. Now every time the browser launches the splash image does a "fade-in" effect and it takes nearly two seconds for each frame of the fade-in to be rendered. Takes like 10-15 seconds before the browser is finally opened.

I have all the interface animations on XP disabled. I'm not certain there isn't something different in my settings - on my local PC I don't believe I see a splash image on startup (though it could be that fast that it's gone before I see it). I could be misconfigured - in any case I thought you might want to know how slow the fade-in effect is over VPN.


Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Logon to VPN
2. Open SeaMonkey browser.
3. Wait wait wait wait wait wait wait.
4. Submit hopefully useful report to Mozilla

Actual Results:  
I waited. A lot. My tea got cold.

Expected Results:  
Faster startup. A nice backrub and a replacement for my cold tea would be nice but not required.

Even if it is my own fault for having something enabled that I don't want - it doesn't seem like the default configuration should show such horrendously slow performance given the number of folks who work from home over VPN now.

I did discover the "-nosplash" option on the startup which fixes it if I launch from the icon but the splash is still always displayed when SeaMonkey is the default browser and launched that way. So when I click on a link in e-mail or double click on a local .html file, I have to wait for a long time. It actually takes about 20-30 seconds for it to finally start up with all that time consumed with the rendering of the fade-in.

Dan, let me know if it behaves the same way using a SeaMonkey 1.1 alpha build.  If it doesn't fade, this is a duplicate of bug 316150.  I just requested approval to land that patch for SeaMonkey 1.0.6.

If it still fades, what are you using to connect remotely?  Citrix?  Something else?  Is there a way for an application to detect it?  Remote Desktop is detected using GetSystemMetrics() here:
