This also seems to be happening on 1.8 branch in both TB and SeaMonkey

Okay, from testing when a message is sent it does go into the sent folder it is just not viewable until you first of all view it in an older client.
Sorry, after more investigation this is not the same bug as I'm seeing, dropping most of my changes
