Importing a PST file (outlook, unicode or not), which contains a specific e-mail (with Thunderbird stable or SeaMonkey nightly build) makes Thunderbird crash in various manners. Either during the import (says it cannot read from a memory address or simply suddently exits the application), or imports correctly and then when I click the imported folder to view the contents it crashes...

It crashes every time with that specific problematic e-mail, although when I exlude the e-mails from and to this specific recipient, I am able to import all the rest of my 800 MB PST file.

I can't see what's special with the problematic e-mail compared to the others, except it's coming from Canada... Maybe this correspondant is using an exotic mailer / encoding / something else?

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. save the PST available at http://smg8.ulb.ac.be/Crashing.pst
2. configure your local outlook version to use this file
2. launch Thunderbird or SeaMonkey
3. tell it to import your e-mails from outlook
4. if not yet crashed, click on the imported folder
Actual Results:  
It crashes, sometimes with an error message (which is not constant).

Expected Results:  
... well, not crash and import the message ;-).
AT LEAST it would be VERY interresting if the software could tell me at WHICH message it encountered an error. You can't imagine the time I spent to figure out which e-mail was causing the problem.

I put an only e-mail in the PST attached (I won't give you my 800 MB-file). After searching very long I figured out that this was one of the only e-mails which caused the problem.

Now, with Thunderbird 2.0.0.14, Import / Mail / Outlook says that it is unable to find e-mails in Outlook, and thus, does not import anything.

I don't know if this problem is related to my initial bug report (Thunderbird detecting something strange and refusing to import) or if it is different (Thunderbird unable to access Outlook PST file?).

When launching outlook, I am able to see, as expected, the e-mail in my PST mail box.

Outlook is not set as my default messaging application (which is Thunderbird), and I have no mail accounts set up in Outlook, only the PST data file.

I also tried to set Outlook to ask me which profile to use at start. When starting manually Outlook, it indeeds ask me the profile to use. When using import from Thunderbird after having closed Outlook I expected that Thunderbird would start Outlook behind the scenes and that Outlook would ask me which profile to use. But that does not happen. Thunderbird just gives me the error message.

Oops, sorry: apparently it took a reboot for Outlook to be really the default email client. Today the import function indeed imported my e-mail.

It does not crash any more, but still the e-mail is not correctly imported.

The e-mail in Outlook appears as following.

As you can see, all the breaklines have been lost, and some characters have been added (e.g. ">>>>Arial>0000,0000,ffff>").

I tried importing an other PST file which contains only one e-mail (an other one) and the e-mail is correctly imported, i.e. the breaklines are kept and no characters are added in the message.

Please note that the server hosting the PST test-case file will be brought down sometime soon. Could someone please make it available on some other public place? (I don't know where to post attachements for bug reports.)
