User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1) Gecko/20061010 Firefox/2.0
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1) Gecko/20061010 Firefox/2.0

When using the flickr map service under http://www.flickr.com/map/, over time more and more memory gets allocated, but never released until firefox is closed. After only 20 min of usage I'm up to almost 1GB.
The service runs fine in Internet Explorer.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.go to http://www.flickr.com/map/
2.switch to satellite view
3.zoom in and out a couple of times and scroll around

Actual Results:
memory gets allocated incrementally, but never freed

Can you please try a new profile and see if it still occurs; it could be an extension causing the excessive memory usage you see.

We should try and figure out if we're leaking DOM windows using dbaron's leak guage. http://lxr.mozilla.org/mozilla/source/tools/footprint/leak-gauge.pl?raw=1

leak-gauge.pl doesn't report any leakage for me at http://www.flickr.com/map/ and switching to satellite view and zooming in and out and stuff.

That worked. I guess it's an extension then. A couple of people reported this bug in the flickr forum. If I find the time later, I will use the new profile and add my old extensions one at a time to find the extension that causes this memory leak.
You could actually just disable the extension(s) in your existing profile to test (right click on them and choose Disable and restart Firefox).

It would be of great help if you could find which extension is causing this. Lots of people complain about Firefox leaking when really it's a problem with an extension.

Thanks for the hint! Is that a new option?

Anyway...I tried and it seems very much like the Adblock extension is causing this problem. Every other ext worked fine (with the flickr-maps interface).
I'm using version 0.5.3.043 of Adblock, but the problem also occured in previous versions.

Try adblock+

Tried it, but it produces the same results. It's even worse, I'm up to 200mb memory usage after 2min.
If you want to reproduce it, you need to unblock the line:

!/yimg\.com(.*/adv/|/a[^u])(?!vision)/

in the Filterset.G. Otherwise the satellite images in flickr-maps will not be displayed once you switch to satellite/hybrid mode.

INVALID then per comment 4 ?
I'm going to try and reproduce this myself first, on 2.0 then on trunk to see if the cycle collector has made a difference. Someone might be interested in how this is leaking too; they have in the past when it comes to extensions causing such problems.
