I go to facebook.com to upload pictures, I upload some, then go to delete them from the local location and am unable even after I have left facebook/closed the tab. I must close FF fully (including chatzilla) before it releases control of the files.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Go to facebook and create a new album and it loads it's java stuff
2. upload a photo
3. close the tab when done
4. try to delete the file you uploaded (from local location, not facebook)
5. Windows generates an error saying unable to delete

Actual Results:
Unable to delete local files after site has been left/closed

Expected Results:
Able to delete files after site has been left/closed
Reporter, do you still see this problem with the latest Firefox 2 and the latest Java? If not, can you please close this bug as WORKSFORME. Thanks!

Confirmed the bug still exists using FF 2.0.0.4/Java 6 update 1

I can confirm that it also exists in the latest Trunk, so the Version description should be changed to denote this.

This is probably related to bug 115450, but it's slightly different in that one would think that the JVM would release its references to files once the applet is unloaded.

Agreed. The resources the specific (closed) applet was using should be released even if the JVM is left running.
This is probably related to Bug 156994, which seems to be fixed if you in fact have the latest version of the Java plugin, SE 6 Update 12 (and possibly even earlier, in SE 6 Update 10).

However, if you want the specific resources closed even while the JVM is still running, then I think that could still be an issue.
Can confirm this still exists as of 3.6 with Java 6 update 17.

I can also now confirm it is not a Java exclusive issue. Using fckeditor's file manager (JavaScript) causes the same issue. Easiest way to test: upload an image, close the file manager tab, attempt to save over that image (ie: edit->save or save another file with that name/location). An error will be given stating that the file is in use even though it has been uploaded and the tab closed.
I'm marking this bug as WONTFIX per bug #1269807.
