User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1) Gecko/20061010 Firefox/2.0 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1) Gecko/20061010 Firefox/2.0 I am currently creating a website (hence the lack of a URL, it doesn't yet exist) and often switch between IE7, Firefox, Opera, etc to see how my coding is going (I hand-code). I switched (as in ALT+TAB switched) to Firefox recently to check a particular page and discovered that a couple of unexpected and unwanted characters had appeared on my page. I scanned the HTML to see if I myself hadn't inserted these characters (I hadn't) and attempted to fix the error. The page in question uses tables and JavaScript (and the JavaScript doesn't seem to be a problem). Thankfully, it looks like the error is avoidable, but an investigation into this problem would not go amiss. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Insert the following in "pagestyle.css": - Start ---------------------- body {font-size: 8pt; font-family: "Tahoma", Tahoma; text-decoration: none} p { font-size: 8pt; font-family: "Tahoma", Tahoma; text-decoration: none} span { font-size: 8pt; font-family: "Tahoma", Tahoma; text-decoration: none} .PageTitle {color: #808080; font-size: 10pt; font-family: "Tahoma", "Tahoma"; text-decoration: none} .PageContent {color: #c0c0c0; font-size: 8pt; font-family: "Tahoma", "Tahoma"; text-decoration: none} - End ---------------------- 2. Insert the HTML below into a new document including all spaces, blank lines and formatting and view it: - Start ---------------------- <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 3.2//EN"> <HTML> <HEAD> <LINK REL="stylesheet" HREF="pagestyle.css"> <META HTTP-EQUIV="CONTENT-TYPE" CONTENT="text/html; charset=windows-1252"> </HEAD> <BODY LANG="en-US" TEXT="#c0c0c0" LINK="#00ffff" VLINK="#00ffff" BGCOLOR="#ffffff" DIR="LTR"> <P ALIGN=CENTER> <SPAN CLASS="PageTitle"><BR>Page Title<BR><BR></SPAN> <TABLE HEIGHT="50" WIDTH="300" CELLPADDING=0 CELLSPACING=0 BORDER=1> <FONT CLASS="PageContent"> <TR> <TD ALIGN=CENTER WIDTH=100> <FONT CLASS="PageContent"> Browser: </FONT> </TD> <TD ALIGN=CENTER> <FONT CLASS="PageContent"> IE </FONT> </TD> </TR> <TR> <TD ALIGN=CENTER WIDTH=100> <FONT CLASS="PageContent"> Browser: </FONT> </TD> <TD ALIGN=CENTER> <FONT CLASS="PageContent"> IE </FONT> </TD> </TR> </TABLE> </BODY> </HTML> - End ---------------------- 3. Insert the HTML below (you may notice is exactly as above without newlines) into a new document including all spaces, blank lines and formatting and view it: - Start ---------------------- <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 3.2//EN"> <HTML> <HEAD> <LINK REL="stylesheet" HREF="pagestyle.css"> <META HTTP-EQUIV="CONTENT-TYPE" CONTENT="text/html; charset=windows-1252"> </HEAD> <BODY LANG="en-US" TEXT="#c0c0c0" LINK="#00ffff" VLINK="#00ffff" BGCOLOR="#ffffff" DIR="LTR"> <P ALIGN=CENTER> <SPAN CLASS="PageTitle"><BR>Page Title<BR><BR></SPAN> <TABLE HEIGHT="50" WIDTH="300" CELLPADDING=0 CELLSPACING=0 BORDER=1> <FONT CLASS="PageContent"> <TR> <TD ALIGN=CENTER WIDTH=100> <FONT CLASS="PageContent"> Browser: </FONT> </TD> <TD ALIGN=CENTER> <FONT CLASS="PageContent"> IE </FONT> </TD> </TR> <TR> <TD ALIGN=CENTER WIDTH=100> <FONT CLASS="PageContent"> Browser: </FONT> </TD> <TD ALIGN=CENTER> <FONT CLASS="PageContent"> IE </FONT> </TD> </TR> </TABLE> </BODY> </HTML> - End ---------------------- Actual Results: You will notice a character next to a dot in the first HTML document, while the second renders perfectly. I personally think that it may be a carriage return/line feed error in the test file I am using, but still, Firefox should filter out all page CRLF errors. Expected Results: I expected Firefox to render the page perfectly. This is most likely a bug in Gecko but since Firefox is the program at fault you are most likely the correct people to talk to. For your information: > This problem does not occur in IE (version 7, at least) and both of the test pages above (or below, depending on how my report is sent to you) render the same (proper) way. > This bug has not been tested with any extra themes. > I've attached screenshots of both pages (note, the Vista-style window/taskbar style is just for show: I use XP SP2.) If you want to contact me for any reason (you would like the original page for testing etc), I can be reached at asmqb@bigpond.com. -------------------- My Firefox configuration: about:buildconfig Build platform target i586-pc-msvc Build tools Compiler Version Compiler flags $(CYGWIN_WRAPPER) cl 12.00.8804 -TC -nologo -W3 -Gy -Fd$(PDBFILE) $(CYGWIN_WRAPPER) cl 12.00.8804 -TP -nologo -W3 -Gy -Fd$(PDBFILE) Configure arguments --enable-application=browser --enable-update-channel=release --enable-official-branding --enable-optimize --disable-debug --disable-tests --enable-static --disable-shared --enable-svg --enable-canvas --enable-update-packaging
Please note that the Vista style you see is just an effect: this bug occurred on a WinXP SP2 machine.
