deleting mail on imap and pop connections doesn't work

more reproducable on imap connections

Reproducible: Sometimes
Steps to Reproduce:
1.open a mail box
2.delete a messeage and close the browser
3.use another mail client to access mail and the deleted mail is still there
In step 2, when you say "close the browser", do you mean exiting the application
including closing mail?

Do you use delete or shift+delete which doesn't actually move the msg to the
trash folder, but really deletes it?

from reporter via email:
HI seems to 'freeze' then recover. shift-delete seems to work with the 'freeze'
in progesss and unfreeze the mail app. no I'm just using the delete key or icon
to delete. I've got both a pop and and imap mail account set up in my profile as
well as news (all with check for new every 10 mins) so I don't know whether
things are getting confused and trying to check both mail boxes at the same
time!?! Martin
Can you give the exact steps again? I don't understand your step 3.

thanks

We have a couple delete bugs and I want to recreate your scenario to verify
these steps are the same as the known bugs. Let's start with your POP account.

Question, For your Pop account in Mail News Account Settings, under Server do
you have the check boxes checked or unchecked for:
"Delete messages from server when deleted locally"
"Leave messages on server"
from martin via email:
well it unfreezes the mail window, but although it 'appears' to have
moved the mail to 'trash' its really not done anything at all - checked
after closing Mozilla and checking the mail boxes with another client.

from martin via another email:
I've got amd imap mail box as default mail and an additional POP mail
box configured, as well as a new server.

When I try and delete (using delete key or icon) mail (from either pop
or imap) it 'appears' to delete the first 2 or 3 then freezes. I can
'unfreeze' the mail by using shift-delete to move the mail to trash.
However when I close Mozilla and check the mail boxes with another
client (netscape/Outlook express etc) it shows that no changes have been
made to the inbox on either the pop or imap mail drops. IE deleting mail
doesn't work.
from martin via email to Esther's question(s):

both are checked.
on the imap side I have 'remove immediately' on local delete as well as
'expunge
inbox in exit' and 'empty trash on exit' checked.
Do you know what imap server you are using? Can you try to get a IMAP log for us?

To do this, set the following environment variables on your windows box:
NSPR_LOG_FILE=c:\temp\nspr.log
NSPR_LOG_MODULES=IMAP:5

Then run seamonkey again and reproduce the imap deletion steps that giving you
problems. Then quit the app. Then attach the file nspr.log to this bug report.
Thanks!

Need more info before I assigna milestone to this.
Mail review recommends nsbeta2.

Putting on [nsbeta2+][6/01] radar. This work must be done by 06/01 or we may
pull this for PR2.

Is this a duplicate of bug 33943?
Due to slip in schedule, moving this bug from [6/01] to [Will be minus on 6/15]
for fix deadline.
Whiteboard: [nsbeta2+][6/01] → [nsbeta2+][Will be minus on 6/15]
Possibly a duplicate - it sounds like a similar thing looking at text. Although
I can't anything to delete with IMAP - the other bug just talks about POP3.
According to your imap log, we couldn't show your message because the message
didn't have a message ID and we were choking on it. I just checked in the fix
for that as part of Bug #41236.

That should fix your imap problem so I'm going to go ahead and mark that as fixed.

The pop part of your problems is a dup of 33943.

Marking this (the imap part) as fixed. Changing QA to huang since it's an imap
problem.

maxsec, based on the description of this bug,

< use another mail client to access mail and the deleted mail is still there

May I ask what kind of the other mail clien are you using?
And can you try again to see whether this problem is still existing or not for
the latest build? Thanks.
By using 06-13-09-M17 commercial build
If I delete from our client internally from IMAP & POP without any problem.

From maxsec comments, we need to verify from the other client since some mail
client may not generating Message-Id.

< use another mail client to access mail and the deleted mail...

I really need help for verify this bug externally.
Putting "Need Help for verify this bug" on the whiteboards.

maxsec, will appreciate that if you can help for verifying this bug!!

If I cannot get the response from you, then I may just base on bug 41236
verification to close this bug!!

Let's try to narrow this down...

Are these the steps you are using?

1. Start Mozilla mail
2. Open Inbox (POP or IMAP). You have more than one message.
3. Select a message
4. Click delete toolbar button

If you follow these steps, does the message that you deleted go away from the
thread pane?

5. Exit and restart Mozilla
6. View your Inbox. Is that message there?

Also, look at your prefs.js file (located in your users50 directory). If using
IMAP, what does this line say:

user_pref("mail.imap.delete_is_move_to_trash", true);

I want to take the factor of another client out of this first.
>1. Start Mozilla mail
>2. Open Inbox (POP or IMAP). You have more than one message.
>3. Select a message
>4. Click delete toolbar button

>If you follow these steps, does the message that you deleted go away from the
>thread pane?

yes, but re-appears on the next 'new message check'

>5. Exit and restart Mozilla
>6. View your Inbox. Is that message there?

yes

>Also, look at your prefs.js file (located in your users50 directory). If using
>IMAP, what does this line say:

>user_pref("mail.imap.delete_is_move_to_trash", true);

no mention of this in the file at all.
Scott, I don't understand why bug 41236 Curtis verified the fix for the message
id thing, but this bug still running problem, do you think this bug is running
some other problem?
Cleaning up status whiteboard by marking beta2 minus (we're past 6/15)
It looks like there was a fix... and folks are trying to verify.
If this regresses, IMO, it may be a beta2 stopper, and should at least be
re-nominated (i.e., delete the beta2 minus from the whiteboard). Basic
read/write/delete mail function has to work in a product for it to be useful.

work around is change the settings for that mail to 'move to trash' on delete
rather than 'remove immediately' and make sure 'expunge trash on exit' etc is
set.
- per mail triage. workaround available.

Instead of reporting a new bug I make this comment to this reopened bug. I'm
unable to delete mail messages in Mozilla 1.2.1 (Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux
i686; en-US; rv:1.2.1) Gecko/20021130), OS: Red Hat Linux 7.1, platform: PC. At
the moment I have the "Move it to the Trash folder" option choosen for the "When
I delete a message" setting, "Clean up ("Expunge") Inbox on Exit" checked and
also "Empty Trash on Exit" checked.

Expected Result: When I mark a message in the Mozilla Mail Inbox and then press
the delete key the message should be moved to the trash folder. When I "close"
the Mozilla Mail program the message should be deleted from the server and not
appear in my Inbox again when I launch Mozilla Mail the next time.

Actual Result: The marked message dissappears from the Inbox when I press the
delete key. I don't know where it's moved though because I don't have a Trash
folder for my email account (c-eriks@algonet.se) at imap.algonet.se. Then I
close Mail and immediately launch it again and the mail message appears again
now with a green arrow pointing at the envelope icon in front of the message
subject text.

I have also tried with a number of other combinations of the settings mentioned
in the beginning. That and more on this subject can be found in my news posting
"Unable to delete messages from IMAP-server" in the newsgroup
netscape.public.mozilla.unix. If you can't get the thread from your news server
it's available via google at the URL below:

http://groups.google.com/groups?dq=&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&selm=3E1C135E.90404%40algonet.se

I hope this information is relevant tho this bug.

Delete of email on imap server does not work if you use the File -> Empty Trash
or if you go to the trash folder and right click and select Empty Trash. The
messages appear to delete, but when you exit the folder and go to another one
and then come back to the Trash folder, the messages are there again.

If you do a ctrl-a and hit delete while in the Trash folder, then they do
actually delete.

Delete of trash works normally on POP.
