In Outlook Express there are two date columns: one for received and for sent with "sent.before(received)" of course. In TB there is only "Date" which is the received date. I would like to be able to sort my mail on the date they were sent.

Reproducible: Always
It's actually the *received* date that's missing... bug 166254. Date is more-or-less the sent date (see the rfc 822 Date definition for more exact info). I'd mark this a duplicate or invalid.
The received date is what's missing... in branch builds. The displayed date in the columns is actually retrieved from the MSF file; and in the trunk, the received date is what gets stored there. (The date in the envelope header is still the same as the Date header.)

With the risk of making a fool of myself I do believe that it is "Sent" that is missing.

Look at the attached screenshot. The mail in question was received today at 18:52 (which is what shows in the 3 pane). Looking at the message source it is clear that the message was sent 21 Feb 2004 13:50:33, so it's not the Sent value that is shown for Date.

I also filed a bug report (#363973) since Date is missing from the single mail window. It might be that there is something wrong with this and another 20 or so mails that I have that causes exact the same problems.
That message doesn't seem to have a Date-header set, as it should. The From - xxxxx is not a mail header, but part of the storage format thunderbird used. (I guess it sets that date to current date or something if no date is given.)
