Quite often, I enter a password, and as the 'Remember password' dialog password appears, I think, oops, wrong password. But the only way to go enter the right password is to press 'Not now', wait for the 'wrong password' alert from the webserver, press back, reload the password form page, and re-enter. This is annoying if you're trying to remember a password and you only get a limited number of tries before the webserver locks you out.
A Cancel button in the Remember password dialog that removes the dialog and returns you to the password form would make life easier. If it's a modal dialog, it needs a cancel button.

I don't think adding a Cancel button to the current dialog would improve it. It already has 3 buttons (4 would be a lot) and I don't think "Cancel" would be used often. Except maybe by people who mean to click "Don't remember" ;)

Maybe "Cancel login".

I like bug 226735.
Asking to save the password after it's proved to be successful makes a lot more sense. (A bit like only adding a new url to the drop-down list of locations on the location bar once it's shown to resolve to something rather than just be a typo - something else Firefox doesn't do.)

bug 226735 is the way to fly here, we don't want a modal interaction at all, so a Cancel button isn't going to be useful, IMO.

Yeah, I agree with Mike. The design work I did earlier this month on non-modal notifications describes a UI where the user is not forced to make a choice in situations like this:
