User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-GB; rv:1.8.1.1) Gecko/20061204 Firefox/2.0.0.1
Build Identifier: version 1.5.0.9 (20061207)

When sending an e-mail in Thunderbird, with it set to automatically add addresses to a given address book -- say, Collected Addresses -- it collects all addresses regardless of whether they already exist in your main address book (say, Personal Address Book).

This leads to a huge amount of cruft building up, as well as confusion. I cannot remember just whose addresses are in my Personal Address Book, so for every one that's sat in Collected Addresses that I want to keep, I have to go and check against Personal Address Book and see if it's there. If I simply copy them across regardless, I risk losing extra details and notes that I kept.

I strongly recommend that the program support not storing any address in the collected addresses address book that is held in any other address book (unless the user specifically wishes this!) so that the ONLY ADDRESSES that are placed in Collected Addresses are NEW addresses that you know you need to file away or delete.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Send a mail to anyone whose address is not in Collected Addresses, but which is in another address book

Actual Results:
Check in Collected Addresses: the address is now duplicated in there

Expected Results:
The program should realise that you already have this address, and not take another copy.
This could be dued to comparison was done on 'Display' name instead of e-mail addresses.
I very much doubt that. See, if I empty Collected Addresses (so there is nothing listed), open a composition window, start typing an address, autocomplete it from an item held in the address book and send, that address ends up in Collected Addresses. *Obviously* the display name matches the one in my address book, because that's where I just pulled the address from. So why did it just collect it? I already have it on file and it knows that. Now I have a worthless duplicate in Collected Addresses.
I agree with Telcontar. I have done the same testing as he has, with the same result.
I do find this annoying, and making the feature somewhat less useful.

As a side note, this bug has also been filed in Bug 104863.
