Also, summary for message is rendered incorrectly: 'Started by | Last comment by made days ago days ago'. Author name and number of days are missing.

Yeah, this is a bug in the Vanilla integration or something. Deb saw this too.
(I wonder if we should have a component for Forums. Probably not -- fewer components is better.)

The $Date error was a typo in our Vanilla instance. I fixed it in SVN r1406.
