The extension TabX has this function now: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/785/ It required an extra restart here after changing the pref to 3.

Not quite. From their description there: "Makes the close buttons on the tabs always visible, even if there are lots of tabs open, and irrespective of the hidden browser.tabs.closeButtons preference." I don't want them to show if there are lots of tabs, but I DO want the "x" on both the tab and the right. It is far more useful that way. Thanks anyhow.

Can someone confirm this bug?

We're not going to do this this, extension fodder if one really wants redundant buttons, but as a default UI this is overkill and fairly ugly.

Not overkill at all. When there are a lot of tabs open, and you want to shut down maybe 5 to 10 of them, you have to try to hit the moving X to close them. If there were an X on the far right it is just click click click ... and done. FAR easier. Please reconsider.

Well, as I wrote in Bug 437223, I think this will be very useful if you don't have an easy input control (touchpad, trackball, mini-mouse, pointing stick, jog dial etc)
