User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.1) Gecko/20061204 Firefox/2.0.0.1
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.1.1) Gecko/20061204 Firefox/2.0.0.1

When I try to download a rar file on asom.iitg.ernet.in, instead of a download box being opened, the rar file itself opens in text format. I did the same thing with Internet Explorer, but there I didn't face this problem. I request you to solve this bug as I still want to stick with firefox and not IE!!!

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Go to asom.iitg.ernet.in
2.Click any link
3.
Actual Results:
The file opened in text format instead of a download dialog box being opened.

Expected Results:
A download dialog box should open.
I can't reach this site but it's almost certainly sending the files with a HTTP header of "Content-type: text/plain", which means the server is misconfigured. You should contact the server admins to ask them to fix the problem.

IE works because they allow sites to be sloppy and then have to sniff the received file for type, while Firefox insists the server follow the standards and declare what it is sending.

[Not setting INVALID since I can't confirm that diagnosis]
Severity: major → normal
Version: unspecified → 2.0 Branch

In the Opera the similar problem is solved adjustment mime types. Simply we add necessary expansion and it is adjusted mime type and necessary action. Mozilla ignores similar user adjustments.
testcase has gone so we cannot check anymore if invalid -> incomplete
